What is Consolidated Rock?
Consolidated Rock is my vehicle for a different type of value investing. I try to go beyond financial ratios to determine the probability of surfacing significant, and currently unrecognized, value in the stocks that I invest in.
I’m more active on Twitter, but this is where I share my thought process, ideas and theories when 280 characters isn’t enough space.
That’s fine, but who are you?
My name is Sultan Ameerali. I’m a former business journalist, having worked at BNN (now known as BNN Bloomberg) for almost 10 years. I produced shows, wrote articles, ran the digital editorial department and eventually transitioned into management, where I built digital products and helped sell advertising. Before that I worked for CTV News, 680News (now CityNews 680), the CBC and Metroland Media.

I’ve always been an investor and a business person at heart. It’s why I moved over to BNN in the first place from CTV News. I transitioned fully into financial services as a marketing executive when it became clear there was nothing more to learn reporting on the business news of the day.
I’ve created sales funnels and advertising strategies for some of the largest mutual fund manufacturers, insurance companies and banks in Canada. I’ve also worked 1-on-1 with advisors to grow their books of business using cold emails. My B2B marketing expertise has been featured by the Globe and Mail’s Content Studio.
Outside of work and investing you might find me at a boxing gym, pilates studio, or just journalling. Other than Twitter, where you probably won’t find me is on social media. I’ve written two books including A Kiss Beside the Monkey Bars, which is used as a teaching text by The University of Toronto’s faculty of Professional Writing and Communication.
I’ve passed the Canadian Securities Course but I’m still deciding whether it’s worth the time, expense and brain damage to tackle level 2 of the CFA program.
